River flooding is rising toward a crest in the coming week in parts of the upper Midwest and could reach levels not seen in over 20 years in parts of the upper Mississippi Valley. Spring flooding is typical in the northern and western U.S. as winter snowpack melts and runs into lakes, creeks, streams and larger rivers.Let's begin with the notable flooding, then we'll explain why it was higher this spring and whether there is any additional significant rain or snow on the way that could compound the flooding.
Shown above are river stage forecasts issued April 21-28, showing the highest degree of flooding as color-coded dots.A stretch of the Mississippi River from the Twin Cities to around Burlington, Iowa, is expected to rise to moderate or major flood stage by the last week of April. The stretch along the Iowa-Illinois border could see additional rises before cresting in early May. It could take several weeks for river levels to fall below flood stage.
