Rishi Sunak's fine for 'no show' patients criticised MedTwitter
Doctors' leaders and health providers have criticised Conservative leadership hopeful Rishi Sunak for backing a £10 fine on people who miss GP and hospital appointments.
Speaking of his plan to fine 'no show' patients, Mr Sunak told The Sunday Telegraph that patients would be given the "benefit of the doubt" the first time they missed an appointment without giving reasonable notice, but would receive a £10 penalty on subsequent occasions. The fine system would remain in place until the backlog was cleared, he said.
Dr Philip Banfield, British Medical Association council chair, said fines would "undermine the essential trust between doctor and patient". It could "discourage them from rebooking, exacerbating already worsening health inequalities and costing the NHS more", he said.
