Prime Minister held talks with Chinese premier following bombshell news of 'Beijing spy' in London
The talks were not confirmed until Sunday morning, after allegations that a parliamentary researcher spied for China broke in theMr Sunak faced immediatefor his recent rapprochement with Beijing. But the Prime Minister hit back, arguing that having a relationship with the Asian country meant he could raise disagreements rather than “shouting from the sidelines”.
Mr Li told Mr Sunak that China and Britain should properly handle disagreements, and respect each other’s core interests and major concerns, Xinhua news agency said.said the UK was being “deeply penetrated” by the Chinese and criticised the Government’s change in stance towards Beijing under Mr Sunak.
“I think that’s the right approach. There’s no point carping from the sidelines, I’d rather be in there directly expressing my concerns, and that’s what I did today.” Both were held on suspicion of offences under section one of the Official Secrets Act 1911, which punishes offences that are said to be “prejudicial to the safety or interests of the state”.
Ms Kearns declined to comment, adding: “While I recognise the public interest, we all have a duty to ensure any work of the authorities is not jeopardised.” They said that the allegations, if true, would be a “serious escalation and shows the CCP will go to any length to attack thorns in their side”.amid criticism from some China-hawk Tory MPs.
