Rishis Sunak called for two-state solution during talks with Turkish President Erdogan and Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas
Israeli troops and tanks gather in southern Israel in preparation for a potential Israeli ground invasion of Gaza In what will be seen as a step-change in international diplomacy in the wake of the Hamas terror attacks, the Prime Minister told the president of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, that he wanted to work with him and other world leaders to reinvigorate efforts to find a two-state solution in the Middle East.
“The Prime Minister updated on the UK’s military deployments to the region, which provide surveillance capabilities and offer a platform to support humanitarian operations if needed.“The Prime Minister reaffirmed the UK’s support for Israel’s right to defend itself following last week’s abhorrent attack, noting that Hamas does not represent the Palestinian people.
Western engagement in the peace process has fallen away over the past decade or more, particularly since Hamas – which is opposed to the state of Israel – took control of Gaza in 2007.Mr Sunak’s official spokesman insisted, however, that the UK was an “active partner in seeking a two-state solution, that’s been our longstanding role both working with countries like the US and with regional partners to that end”.
Given the lack of Western engagement in the peace process over the past decade, there are also risks that any UK, US or other leader trying to reinvigorate talks now would lack credibility. “The leaders agreed on the importance of avoiding further regional escalation and ensuring calm in the West Bank.
