Phyllis Bailey, the bringer of equal rights in athletics to Ohio State, passed away peacefully over the weekend. She was 96 years old.
In 1971, Bailey stepped to the forefront of a national movement when she helped found the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. She embodied the organization’s belief that competitive sports experiences can only enhance the educational experience of females. Back then, that was still a novel thought.
Bailey made the most of it. She loved Ohio State and wanted the transition to be right. She put together a five-year plan and made it work. Here’s an excerpt from an interview she did in 2004:
