The human immune system is designed to fight cancer, but cancer often “out-smarts” the immune system, Bosch said. CAR T gives the immune system more of a fighting chance by boosting the cells that fight cancer. “Sometime after getting my CAR T done, the doctor told me I was knocking on death’s door more than once,” Carriere said. He described himself as a “shrinking” man, having lost 52 kg due to his illness. In the aftermath of his treatment, he quickly gained 18.6 kg back, he said.
