Based on the Baz Luhrmann movie, ‘Moulin Rouge! The Musical’ crams 75 great pop songs and opulent scenery and costumes into a flat love story.
Baz Luhrmann is nothing if not an original, a filmmaker oft hailed for his brash showmanship and flirty eye-candy. “Moulin Rouge! The Musical,” the exuberant Broadway homage to his iconic 2001 movie, likewise seduces the viewer with its sheer unadulterated spectacle.In the eye-popping opening tableau, the viewer is seduced by a windmill at one end of the glittering stage and an elephant at the other as the music slides from “Lady Marmalade” to Lady Gaga.
Stage director Alex Timbers captures the visual decadence of this fin-de-siecle fantasy about lust, love and money in the shadow of Montmartre. Swords are swallowed and derrieres bared in this bawdy temple of gorgeous bodies. Catherine Zuber’s bejeweled costumes are nothing short of blissfully jaw-dropping.
The actors surrender to the songs far more believably than they do to each other. There’s zilch chemistry between the leads, the period melodrama feels forced and there’s no sting of loss to give us even a pang of poignancy. The 2001 movie memorably paired Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman as the doomed lovers.
