Director Claire Simba (Moxie Theatre’s 'The Mango Tree' last year) keeps the energetic cast going onstage in play by John Kolvenbach at Scripps Ranch Theatre

How lonely is Beane, the single White male introvert of Scripps Ranch Theatre’s “Love Song?” His tiny apartment is illuminated by one dangling bulb. His silverware consists of one spoon. And thanks to some stage magic, the walls are literally closing in him.

One night while Beane is wallowing in his digs, a beautiful burglar dressed just as he is appears. When all she finds to steal are a few pairs of socks, that solitary spoon and the cup out of which Beane eats all his meals, she goes into full standup routine, as much for the audience as for her victim.

After fearing that Beane has turned to drugs or just flipped his lid, Joan and Harry interrupt their constant quarreling to rekindle a long-dormant romance. The most entertaining scene in “Love Song” by a considerable margin is that in which the marrieds mutually agree to play “hooky” from work. They spend the morning smoking imaginary cigarettes , admiring robes and hairlines, and then making out. More is implied, naturally.Joan’s and Harry’s doesn’t last.
