Dr. Harold Miller, 85, a retired OB/GYN in his Houston home on Tuesday, May 3, 2022. Miller looks back on his profession before the 1973 Roe V. Wade decision, when he treated women in dire medical situations because they had attempted illegal abortions on their own. He worries about the future, as Texas is poised to outlaw nearly all abortions if the Supreme Court strikes down the landmark decision. “What I saw as a young physician, almost made me quit the profession,” Dr. Miller said.
Some of the young woman’s organs had already “turned to mush,” he said. She died of her bacterial infection three days later — the only patient death Miller had experienced in his more than 50-year career. Now, Miller shares this story widely, warning people of what could happen with more restrictive abortion laws.
In light of Monday’s news, Miller reflected on the many patients he saw before the Roe decision who sought to terminate their pregnancy. Women who tried to perform the operation themselves often developed bacterial infections or damaged their reproductive organs, making it more difficult or impossible to give birth later in life. Sometimes, he said, early treatment could prevent long-term complications.
