House GOP members elected House Majority Leader Rep. Ben Toma, R-Peoria, as next year's speaker of the House. GOP says 'important work' will get done.
New Republican leaders in the Arizona House of Representatives struck a note of optimism Tuesday about how lawmaking would work under Democratic Gov.-elect Katie Hobbs.
Partisan issues will arise as proposed legislation and Republicans may vote for them, but it's unclear how such bills will"survive," Toma said, pointing out that the Legislature won't have a veto-proof majority to override Hobbs' rejection of bills she doesn't like. The question of who was the more-committed conservative wasn't an issue in the leadership votes, he said, but rather,"How do we come together as one and get what we need to get done for the state of Arizona?"
"I mean, it's not Thunderdome, for Pete's sake — you know, two men enter, one man leaves," Martinez said."We're gonna debate like adults."While Lake lost, the Legislature appears headed for continued Republican dominance with even more hard-line conservatives in the mix than it had the past two years.
Hobbs would undoubtedly veto any dramatic election changes suggested by Trump supporters, such as getting rid of early voting and mail-in ballots. He said he sent an email to Hobbs on Monday telling her,"I look forward to working with you when I can."Democrats had a plan, and a decent chance of tying or winning either the state Senate or House of Representatives in last week's election, and almost pulled it off.
