The House adjourned for the day after failing to elect a speaker on the first ballot for the first time in 100 years.

Republicans won a five-seat majority in the Nov. 8 midterms, but McCarthy failed to get the 218 votes he needed.

On three roll call votes, McCarthy managed no more than 203 votes, as far-right members of his caucus coalesced around Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio. McCarthy actually lost support as the balloting continued, even as Jordan nominated him on the House floor and voted for him all three times. In fact, the Democratic nominee for speaker, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., received more votes for speaker than McCarthy or Jordan did, winning the support of all 212 House Democrats. The outgoing speaker, Rep. Kean’s father, the former governor, came to Washington to see his son sworn in. The younger Kean’s wife and children also were at the Capitol for a ceremony that didn’t come. The House was scheduled to return Wednesday to try to elect a speaker. Once elected, the new speaker will swear in the entire House, including Kean and Menendez.
