People donated more than $27,000 to Perkins K-8 because of the story, principal Fernando Hernández told me. Perkins and many other schools like it would benefit from greater community involvement.
; the foundation runs an after-school tutoring program and provides other resources for Perkins.
But consistency is crucial, especially for kids who are already experiencing loss and instability in their lives. That means not just coming in for one day to volunteer then leaving. And Perkins is not the only school that can benefit from more community buy-in. Its story provides a window into the struggles that have become so common in schools nationwide. Scores of other high-poverty schools in San Diego County would also benefit from positive community involvement and investment.Reporter’s notebook: This school welcomed me in. Its openness is rare but needed.
And school staff will consider how best to spend the $27,000 they’ve recently received in donations. Hernández’ idea is to use it for field trips, like a trip to the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles. Exposure to new experiences is especially important for Perkins students, he said, some of whom have never even been to the beach. It lost three teachers last month due to declining enrollment and less funding.
