Some defendants in the Harris County Jail have waited more than two days to be processed, an issue that has led a Texas agency that oversees state standards to serve the sheriff with a notice of non-compliance, according to officials. A recent inspection of jail records by the Texas Commission of Jail Standards found that 64 defendants were held in the booking area more than the maximum 48 hours after an arrest. Some of those defendants were held as long as 90 hours, a spokesman for the Harris County Sheriff's Office said.
The struggle to find room for incoming inmates comes amid a skyrocketing jail population. As of Wednesday, more than 10,340 people were being held."It’s math. We have more people going in than going out," spokesman Jason Spencer said. The sheriff's office has 30 days to come up with a plan to alleviate the intake delay. Among the temporary fixes: send some defendants to a Texas facility elsewhere --
