“It’s an old saying, if you don’t know where you come from, you don’t know where you’re going,” said Reverend Dr. Jacquelyn Denson, Presiding Elder of the 9th Episcopal district AME church. “It’s important for us to constantly remind our youth that this was a part of our history.” Members of multiple churches came together and took part in a reenactment march starting at the City of St. Jude, the final campsite for civil rights marchers before making it to the State Capitol building. They concluded the day at the steps of the Capitol just like the original marchers.

“If we stop doing it, the history is gonna die,” expressed Reverend Dr. Cathey Bruce, organizer of the day’s events. “But we want the history to live, because guess what? It’s gonna be our young people who are gonna have to take up the torch and keep moving on.” Speeches included calls to vote and firsthand accounts of racial discrimination in the civil rights era. Participants were encouraged to record and share their experience to have their work displayed in Montgomery’s Rosa Parks Museum.
