According to new research, speed limits of 20mph on urban roads do not significantly improve safety.
Research has found cutting speed limits on urban roads to 20mph does not significantly improve safety Reducing the maximum from 30mph or 40mph resulted in ‘no statistically significant differences’ in the number of crashes, casualty rates or average traffic speed, a study in Northern Ireland found.
Roads with a 20mph limit did enjoy a reduction in traffic, according to the analysis of 76 in Belfast before and after the restriction was introduced. And the speed restrictions could be effective if combined with measures such as driver training and CCTV, says the study in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.Reducing speed limits can be ‘part of the fundamental reset of the way we choose our life priorities – people before cars’, the report says.
Its authors, who include Prof Ruth Hunter of Queen’s University Belfast and Dr Ruth Jepson of the University of Edinburgh, noted their research was smaller in scale than other studies.
