The SEC has had 15 Heisman Trophy winners in the award's 80-plus year history. In the first 70 years the Heisman Trophy was given out, an SEC player took home the award just seven times. In the last 15 years, however, the SEC has won eight Heismans.
NOTE: This list does not include South Carolina’s George Rogers or Texas A&M’s John David Crow, who won their Heismans before their schools were members of the SEC.LSU's Billy Cannon won the Heisman Trophy in 1959, a year after the Tigers claimed the national championship. Cannon put up rather modest statistics even for the 1950s, rushing for 598 yards and five touchdowns for an LSU team that finished 9-2 a year after winning the national championship.
Thirty years before coaching Florida to a national championship in 1996, Steve Spurrier won the Heisman Trophy as the Gators' quarterback in 1966. Before becoming one of the great coaches in college football history, Spurrier gained fame as a quarterback with a penchant for fourth-quarter comebacks. He led the Gators to eight such victories during his college career, including a memorable October 1966 win over Auburn that likely led him to the top of the Heisman Trophy heap.
Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel led the Gators to a national championship in 1996, and also won the Heisman Trophy that year. After near misses in 1994 and 1995, Steve Spurrier’s Gators finally broke through to win the national championship in 1996. And after finishing third in the Heisman balloting in his junior year, Wuerffel won a relatively close vote in his senior season.
Tim Tebow helped Florida to national championships in 2006 and 2008. In between, he won the Heisman Trophy in 2007. After contributing to the Gators’ 2006 national championship as a short-yardage and goal-line quarterback, Tebow took over the controls of Florida’s offense in 2007 and put up big numbers. He passed for 3,286 yards and 32 touchdowns and added 895 yards and 23 more touchdowns rushing. His rushing touchdown total and 55 total touchdowns were SEC records at the time.
