, 302 baseball players born in Puerto Rico have played in the big leagues. 28 players from the island started this season, representing 1.7% of the total number of MLB players. The number of Puerto Rican baseball players seems low compared with other Latin American countries, but there is an explanation. In addition, the Puerto Rico government asks the clubs to include a clause in their players’ contracts to pay for their college studies if they do not make their major league debut.
“We want our youngsters to have enough education to be successful in life if they can’t fulfill their dream in the major leagues,” Quiñonez said. The benchmark for Puerto Rican baseball in the majors is Roberto Clemente, the outfielder who played for the Pittsburgh Pirates .Clemente was the first Latino player inducted into the Hall of Fame. His premature death in a plane crash while aiding the victims of an earthquake in Nicaragua in 1972 made him a legend.
“Roberto was not the first Puerto Rican player in the major leagues. Still, he was the one who, with his amazing skills, made major leagues turn to see Puerto Rico,” said Norberto Pérez, deputy director of the Puerto Rico Convention District. “Roberto is one of the first black Latinos to play in the major leagues, and that was not a given back then. Roberto helped close the racial gap in U.S. baseball’, Pérez said.“The legacy of Puerto Rican baseball players goes beyond baseball. It is very important to mention what Puerto Rican baseball players do for the community,” said Rodríguez, who, together with his wife, runs a foundation to help poor and homeless children.
“We are involved in positive things and creating good role models for our children and young people. For me, that is more important than any recognition or statue.”
