Commentary: In the 1970s, at Trinity College, faculty and students were embedded in a community that validated and enriched faith.
It wasn’t quite Camelot, but for a few years during the 1970s, Trinity College in Deerfield was an extraordinary place, a school where evangelical students were encouraged to expand their horizons. Now the president and board of regents areI attended Trinity College and its sister institution, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, in the 1970s, earning a bachelor’s degree in history from the college and a Master of Arts in church history from the divinity school.
I’m not the only student who was introduced to the life of the mind at Trinity College. Since the announcement of the school moving the Deerfield campus fully online, dozens of students have offered similar testimonies. The new president quickly culled the ranks of the college faculty and embarked on a reckless expansion program. He added a law school, two campuses in Florida, a Bible camp and other institutions, then grandly renamed the new colossus Trinity International University — or as a friend and fellow alumnus likes to say, Trinity Intergalactic.
On the face of it, the loyalty of alumni and alumnae to Trinity College is unwarranted. Our dormitory accommodations were crude and overcrowded, the school faced perpetual financial crises, and members of the faculty were overworked and woefully underpaid. And whatever the merits of our school, we were perpetually in the shadow of a nearby evangelical institution, Wheaton College.
