BREAKING: the Department for Transport has announced regulated rail fares in England will increase by up to 5.9% from March 5 next year.
Millions of commuters will be hit by even more expensive rail fares in England next year.
But Labour has hit out at the ‘savage’ increase, while a watchdog has said ‘it’s clear that too many passengers are not getting a value-for-money service’. Around 45% of all rail fares are currently regulated by the price cap, while train operators are free to set them otherwise. Transport Secretary Mark Harper said today: ‘This is the biggest-ever Government intervention in rail fares.‘I’m capping the rise well below inflation to help reduce the impact on passengers.. We do not want to add to the problem.
