A catamaran and kayak overturned in the Strait of Juan de Fuca.PORT TOWNSEND, Wash. — Coast Guard crews and good Samaritans pulled four “Race to Alaska” boaters from the waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca near Port Townsend on Monday morning while a gale warning and small craft advisory were in effect.
At 10:34 a.m., the 13th Coast Guard District, which serves the Pacific Northwest, tweeted that the victims had been kayaking and sailing from Port Townsend to Victoria when their vessels overturned., four people had been pulled from the water — three by the Coast Guard and one by a good Samaritan. The Coast Guard tweeted a photo of a catamaran and kayak that had overturned. Officials confirmed that those on the vessels were participating in the “Many of the boaters are taking shelter at Protection Island, just west of Port Townsend, during the rough weather.
Crews from a U.S. Coast Guard rescue boat and a cutter, as well as crews from the Canadian Coast Guard remain in the area for other boaters who might need help.
