Legendary horror director John Carpenter shares his reaction to Barbie, which is steeped in confusion about Barbie's themes and purpose.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Legendary horror director John Carpenter claims that he didn’t understand Barbie. This year’s Greta Gerwig-directed comedy has been praised for its fresh, zany take on the classic Mattel toy. Barbie impressed not only in the prowess of its script but in its box office staying power, making over $1.4 billion at the worldwide box office to become the highest-grossing film of 2023 as of writing.

In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Carpenter shares his confusion about Barbie. After seeing Barbie, the iconic director was baffled that he even watched it, saying that he was not the target audience because he “had nothing to do with Barbie dolls.

I watched "Barbie." I can’t believe I watched “Barbie.” It’s just not my generation. I had nothing to do with Barbie dolls. I didn't know who Allan was. I mean, I can sum it up. She says, “I don’t have a vagina,” and then at the end, “I’m going to go to a gynecologist!” That’s the movie to me. I mean, there’s a patriarchy business in there, but I missed that whole thing. Right over my head. But I think she’s fabulous, Margot Robbie.

Why Barbie Is Not For Everyone From not understanding Allan’s character to summarizing Barbie’s feminist messaging as merely “a patriarchy business," the iconic horror director is not the only viewer to express their issues with the comedy. Other commentators and critics have voiced similar dissatisfaction with the film's approach, which steers it away from its branded image of the toy.

Although Carpenter's review may sound disappointing, it reflects the movie's challenges concerning its target demographic. With the film's weight on social commentaries, such as feminism, patriarchy, and free will, the target audience prioritized younger female groups who would generally enjoy such messages and themes. The comedy is less appealable to older male crowds, who are not usually interested in such concepts.
