The queen’s display of loyalty to Andrew at the service has given royal critics new ammunition to say the British monarchy is an antiquated institution that lacks accountability.
Some 1,800 family members and other guests attended the memorial for Philip, who died last year at age 99. Those present included the queen’s other children, Charles, Anne and Edward, her grandson, William, his wife, Catherine, and their two older children, George and Charlotte. Other European royals also attended, including Prince Albert of Monaco, Denmark’s Queen Margrethe and King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain.
The service was her first public event in months, since she dealt with a reportedly minor bout of COVID-19 as well as unspecified mobility issues. The latter have raised questions about whether she needs a wheelchair to get around and about whether she’d even be able to attend the service. The display of loyalty has sparked fierce public debate on social media and elsewhere. On Twitter, some were kindly disposed to the 95-year-old queen.
