Qatar’s World Cup will pay Gulf-wide dividends - gfhay -
Gulf Cooperation Council economies are expected to grow by 2.6% in 2021, the World Bank said in its latest Gulf Economic Update on Dec. 2.
The World Bank said that tourism was bouncing back rapidly as restrictions on travel eased both in the GCC and around the world, providing a boost particularly to Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. It added that the Dubai Expo was unlikely to meet its pre-pandemic target of attracting more than 10 million visitors, but Dubai hotel occupancy was up from 54% in 2020 to 62% in the third quarter of 2021.
The World Bank said Qatar’s hosting of the World Cup in 2022 was likely to maintain interest and traveller numbers to the region, as was the resumption of the Hajj without restrictions in Saudi Arabia.Source: REUTERS/Ibraheem Al Omari Soccer Football - World Cup - Asia Qualifiers - Second Round - Group E - Oman v Qatar - Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium, Doha, Qatar - June 7, 2021.
