One of Vladimir Putin’s leading political opponents, Vladimir Kara-Murza, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for treason after court hearings that the Russian dissident has compared to a Stalinist show trial robhastings reports

“Vladimir Kara-Murza bravely denounced Russia’s invasion of Ukraine for what it was – a blatant violation of international law and the UN Charter,” said Mr Cleverly. “Russia’s lack of commitment to protecting fundamental human rights, including freedom of expression, is alarming.”

“There are now hundreds of people in Russia imprisoned for their political views or their religious beliefs – more than in the waning years of the Soviet Union,” he wrote. He said that he had known what his trial’s outcome would be ever since he realised he was about to be arrested last year, “when I saw people in black uniforms and black masks running after my car in the rearview mirror. Such is the price for speaking up in Russia today.”the war in Ukraine
