In recent months, Mr Prigozhin has publicly criticised the Russian defence ministry for failing to provide new troops and ammunition supplies to his forces, which are focused on theWhile some reports have suggested Mr Putin could bring in a new private militia to replace Wagner, Western sources suggest he is more likely to attempt to remove Mr Prigozhin and orchestrate a takeover of command by more Kremlin-friendly leaders.
“There is this constant tension between the [Russian] MoD and Wagner,” said one Western official. “I don’t see that there’s going to be one single organisation that would take over from Wagner, but what you might see is a change in the hierarchy at the top of Wagner.
The official added: “This plays out in the spat between Prigozhin and the very senior members of the Russian MoD. “But we don’t see a wholesale disbandment of Wagner and it being replaced by another private military company.”as part of an ongoing rivalry between himself and parts of the Russian military elite.
