David Mundee The last two years, the Providence Christian and Houston Academy girls cross country teams battled it out for a coveted state title.

The stage is set for round three between the Providence Christian and Houston Academy girls after the two teams went nearly pace for pace at last week’s 4A, Section 1 meet in Montgomery. At last week’s section meet, the Raiders were paced by the trio of Brianna Hart, Macauley Flanagan and Emily Selig Pineda, who finished third through fifth in the 5K race. Hart ran a time of 19 minutes and 26.35, while Flanagan recorded a 19:29.84 time and Pineda a 19:48.94 time.

Talmadge, a junior, enters as one of the individual favorites in Class 4A. She won the state individual title two years ago and finished runner-up last year and in fourth place in 2020. Wiregrass program, Geneva, finished seventh at the Class 4A, Section 1 meet, but had two individuals state qualifiers – Kaden Ward and Bella Johnson , who finished 13th and 20th.The girls qualifying teams are Enterprise , Headland , Houston Academy , Providence Christian , Opp and Wicksburg . Boys teams headed to state are Enterprise , Providence Christian , Zion Chapel and Wicksburg .

The Eagles amassed 19 points, well ahead of runner-up St. Michael Catholic . Houston Academy finished sixth and Geneva eighth. Houston Academy was led by Ivory McGriff, who finished 17th with a career-best 18:38.89 time. Destin Martin , Brady Turner , Aidan Philipps and Ganesh Avula were the next Raider finishers.Wicksburg girls win 1A-2A section: Behind three top-six finishers, Wicksburg won the Class 1A-2A Section 1 meet.

Zion Chapel, Wicksburg led boys: Both Zion Chapel and Wicksburg qualified as boys teams from Class 1A-2A, Section 1, finishing third and fourth.
