Maplewood residents gathered Thursday to protest the reported plea deal in the case of Moussa Fofana's alleged killer.
“We just want justice for Moussa,” said Hawa Fofana, the teen’s mother, at the protest Thursday.on the night of June 6, 2021, police said.
“This is an outrage. This is the kind of thing we cannot let happen in this country,” said former Maplewood Mayor Fred Profeta at the protest. “Victims have rights. They need justice. Moussa needs justice.” Police arrested Hernandez in August 2021. He is charged with murder, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He told police he was trying to protect himself and his younger brother at the time of the shooting, the documents show.
“We have been mindful of the importance of keeping the family, through their counsel, informed of all important aspects of this case, and have afforded them their right to offer meaningful input that we have considered in formulating the proposed plea,” said acting Essex County prosecutor Theodore Stephens.
