Something felt off about the endless satellite news trucks and equipment taking over front yards, journalists wielding their camcorders, cameras and mics. I questioned the camera clicks and rolling video at vigils and memorials, in churches, homes and streets. The intense media response was necessary and warranted for such a tragedy, but it also felt invasive.

During this most difficult time, the Uvalde community has endured the media spotlight. Motels, restaurants, Starbucks and Wi-Fi were overwhelmed. One local restaurant worker, clearly exhausted from the onslaught of customers not typical for the small town, told me she couldn’t wait for the media to leave.This happens after every school and mass shooting. It is part of the aftermath of repeated, preventable gun violence.
