On the first day of school, a Uvalde mom visits her daughter’s grave
“My Eliahna was so excited and nervous because she was going to the fifth grade. She was robbed from that experience,” Cruz said.
“She was my baby,” she said, her voice trailing off, tears in her eyes. “And she was always with a smile.” Eliahna played second base for the Lady Bombshells. May 24 was to be her final softball game of the season. It’s also when she would find out if she made All-Stars. But “it wasn’t my baby lying there,” Cruz said. “It was her best friend, Jackie. She was just lying there, lifeless. It hurt so bad because I knew how much this little girl meant to my daughter. But then I had hope. My baby was out there. She was still alive.”There, she was told there were buses en route. But there was not a bus for her daughter’s teacher, Arnulfo Reyes. All 11 students in his classroom died.
