What a woman

A woman hailed as a heroine of the home front during the First World War has been commemorated on International Women's Day .

Around 1911, there is evidence of Beatrice's movement towards becoming a pioneering woman. She and a woman named Lily, who also lived with the couple, were active suffragists but did not join the ‘Boycott’ of the 1911 Census. A small committee was formed including Beatrice who ran an association of between 300 and 400 workers, who unselfishly and ungrudgingly worked the Station Buffet day and night to provide food, drink and shelter.

As well as having an impact on those who passed through Preston on their way to and from the battlefields of the Great War, she played an important role in improving the lives of local people. The first was established in July 1915 and by the end of 1916 over 2,000 babies were being seen and supported each year. Beatrice led the committee to establish the Preston Infant Welfare Voluntary Women’s Association, two years before corporations were required to set them up by the government.
