It brought millions of pounds into the economy last year
Nottinghamshire is set to host more than 60 miles of the prestigious Tour of Britain cycle race when the event returns this year. The county has welcomed part of the event on three occasions since it first launched in 2004.
Last year saw the race return to Nottinghamshire for the first time in four years, with leading cyclists from around the world travelling a route that encompassed areas including West Bridgford, Cotgrave and Worksop, before finishing in Mansfield. Nottinghamshire County Council says last year's event boosted the local economy by £4.34 million in net visitor expenditure.
Around 225,000 fans lined the 116-mile route in 2022 and the county council now says they will have the chance to do so again when the race returns to Nottinghamshire in September. Councillor Ben Bradley, the Conservative leader of the county council, said: "We have demonstrated on the three previous occasions that we can successfully host what is a truly major event on Britain's sporting calendar, and I would expect the same in 2023.
Last year's race was set to travel from Scotland to the Isle of Wight, with Nottinghamshire hosting the fifth leg of the event. But the Nottinghamshire section of last year's race ended up being the last, given that it took place on the same day as the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the three remaining stages were cancelled as a mark of respect.
That meant the winner of last year's Tour of Britain was Spanish cyclist Gonzalo Serrano. The race is shown daily in the UK on ITV4 whilst it takes place.
