Analysis from Chris Beesley after the Merseyside derby at Anfield
This correspondent isn’t trying to portray himself as some latter day Nostradamus when it comes to Merseyside Derby predictions but I got this one spot-on.
Having covered both clubs since 2005, in my position of Everton reporter earlier this month, I produced an opinion piece headlined: “Sorry Jurgen but when are Everton getting Merseyside Derby replays for referees’ blunders” after Klopp called for Liverpool’s game at Tottenham Hotspur to be replayed because of a VAR mix-up. One old friend, who is now a high-ranking figure within Anfield’s corridors of power, messaged me to say: “I’m giving you credit for a cracking wind up here”.
Like Young against Liverpool, the midfielder picked up a second yellow card but his team-mates held out for a 3-2 win over Austria to secure their place in next summer’s European Championship finals. Onana was therefore suspended for Monday’s game with Sweden that was abandoned with the score 1-1 at half-time after two people were shot dead in the streets of Brussels, but along with everyone else in the stadium, was forced to stay inside for security reasons before an eventual evacuation.
