A prayer vigil will be held Monday for five Montgomery firefighters injured while battling a blaze two weeks ago, including two who were critically injured.
On Sunday, May 14, Montgomery Fire and Rescue responded to a fire in the 3400 block of Gilmer Avenue. They arrived to find a single-story home in flames.
Crews received reports that people were still inside. They were able to rescue three victims while still extinguishing the blaze. Two of them – Capt. Donald L. Crenshaw Jr., 45, and firefighter Deandre M. Hartman, 34, were stabilized and transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham. Crenshaw was flown back to Montgomery on Wednesday.Three other firefighters – David O. Watson, James A. Christian and Adarius Wesley – were quickly treated and released from the hospital.
Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed announced the prayer vigil, which is set for 9 a.m. Monday at Montgomery City Hall on N. Perry Street. “The vigil will allow the community to come together to honor these brave firefighters while supporting them in the long recovery ahead,’’ city officials said in a statement announcing the vigil. “Recovery will be a lengthy process for both firefighters and their families.”
