Gunter defeated the Pirates 42-7 to win the Class 3A Division II championship.
Ryan Lochhead/ContributorARLINGTON — Hobbling from a shin injury that sidelined him from the biggest game of his life, Poth senior Matthew Bunn wanted to take the field one more time.
“It meant the world to me,” said Bunn, also the Pirates’ starting back. “These guys have been my family my whole life. We’ve all grown up together. This has been a dream of ours. It meant everything to go out there one last time.” “We knew going into it Gunter was a great football team on defense,” Raabe said. “We hurt ourselves a little bit, but respect goes out to them. They are the best in the state to do it. Unfortunately, we couldn’t move the ball. At least we were able to score one last time.”
Senior running back Ashton Bennett was selected as the Offensive MVP after rushing for 87 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. Sophomore safety Colin Peacock was the named Defensive MVP after making seven tackles and recording an interception. The Pirates, seeking their first state title, trailed 21-0 after one half. Bennett scored on runs of 12 and 11 yards to put the Tigers ahead, 14-0, with 6:00 in the second quarter.
The Pirates slogged through a tough defensive battle early, but Gunter eventually put together longer drives that wore out the Pirates. Gunter totaled 463 offensive yards and 27 first downs.
