Spencerport, N.Y. A hometown hero who gave his life in service to his community is being honored once again.
A portion of State Route 259 in the village is now known as the Firefighter Robert Fowler Memorial Highway.
Spencerport, N.Y. — A hometown hero who gave his life in service to his community is being honored once again.Fowler, who had served as a volunteer firefighter in Spencerport since 1974, was killed in 1997 when a tree fell on his car as he was driving to the firehouse."He wasn't and isn't a hero because of his death. He's a hero because of his service in life," said Gail Fowler, Robert's wife, during the dedication ceremony held Thursday.
More than 25 years later, Fowler still remains the only Spencerport firefighter who died in the line of duty.
