The envisioned 'shore power' connection will allow cargo ships to use electricity rather than diesel engines while at berth at the marine terminal, cutting down on neighborhood pollution.

Leaders overseeing the Port of San Diego voted Tuesday to approve an $8.5 million electrification project aimed at curbing diesel and other pollution from cargo ships docked in National City.

“This is a really exciting time to see us actually becoming a cutting-edge, clean port,” said port Commissioner Sandy Naranjo at the hearing. “I’m definitely in favor of this.”Dole Food Co. uses the same plug-in technology at the 10th Avenue Marine Terminal. The port also recently expanded a shore-power system along Harbor Drive to allowNational City, along with the neighborhood of Barrio Logan in San Diego, suffers some of the worst air quality in California, according to regulators.

The two technologies are expected to cut the National City terminal’s diesel and smog pollution in half, according to staff. Ocean-going vessels currently contribute about a third of the port’s total diesel emissions.
