Officer Anthony Varvaro was heading to serve the World Trade Center command on Sunday morning when he was killed in a car crash near the Holland Tunnel.
There are heavy hearts on Staten Island. Anthony Varvaro grew up on the North Shore in Westerleigh, retired from his Major League Baseball career as a pitcher, and joined the Port Authority a few days later.
Varvaro was heading to serve the World Trade Center command on Sunday morning when he was killed in a car crash near the Holland Tunnel.Varvaro always wanted to be a police officer. One example of that drive and determination - at one point he had a baseball game on a Wednesday night, retired the next day and then joined the academy by the end of the week.
He was a standout student at St. John's. His former head coach Mike Hampton said, 'Not only was he everything you could want out of a ball player, he was everything you could want in a person." The Atlanta Braves posted condolences on Twitter saying, in part, "our thoughts and prayers are with Varvaro's family and colleagues.""The entire Port Authority family is heartbroken to learn of the tragic passing of Officer Anthony Varvaro. Officer Varvaro represented the very best of this agency and will be remembered for his courage and commitment to service.
