The quiz has expanded for the screen, necessarily so because it lasts a full hour. There are five contestants instead of the radio version’s two, and none are required to hold phones to their ears. Instead, in TV quiz show fashion, they stand side-by-side behind a long desk replete with individual buzzers, and they each have wiggle room to dance if the mood takes them.
There are familiar rounds, such as Beat the Intro and Three in 10, alongside newer ones that take full advantage of the visuals, among them Video Gaga, in which the quizzers have to guess the artist from the stills of a video. This can be difficult if you are over the age of 60, and the answer is Rita Ora.
As per the original source material, the quiz covers music from the 1960s to the 2020s, but shares its true comfort zone with its contestants: the 70s and 80s. Because points make prizes, those with the lowest totals are eliminated first. In the final head-to-head round Ocean Colour Scheme’s Davie is sharp, but Lisa, a bassoonist from London, is sharper still. It is she who’s crowned the show’s first winner. Her prize? A framed gold disc. She seems pleased, if not elated.
