Officers at Northamptonshire Police have been granted additional stop search powers
ahead of a vigil for killed teenager Rohan 'Fred' Shand in Northampton this evening . Between 3pm and 10pm, officers will be able to stop any pedestrian or vehicle in Kings Heath without any cause for suspicion and conduct a search for offensive weapons.
The additional searching powers have been granted under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994. The area affected runs from Harlestone Road to the railway line and from Spencer Bridge Road to Swale Drive.The vigil tonight will be held in Fred's memory and the Force says the new measures will allow people to pay their respects peacefully.
Chief Inspector Nathan Murray, said: “Although we believe that Fred's tragic murder was an isolated incident, we understand that there is concern in the local area and authorising these extra police powers will help us provide a safe environment for everyone and support the wider community at this time.
