Police say some offenders hide weapons in easily accessible locations to try to avoid being caught in possession
Police carried out a knife search at a Nottingham play area following reports of large groups congregating. Officers based at Radford Road Police Station swept for weapons at nearby Chard Street Play Area on Monday, November 14.
The force said some offenders hide weapons in easily accessible locations to try to avoid being caught in possession. Sergeant Mark Southgate, of the City Central neighbourhood team, said in the past officers had found weapons hidden in hedgerows and behind walls. “These searches are definitely worthwhile," he said. "In the past we’ve found not only knives but other weapons as well such as hammers. That said, it is rare to find a weapon in a public space – people certainly won’t be tripping over them in their local parks.”
Further searches will be undertaken at other public spaces later this week, with neighbourhood teams across the county also carrying out knife sweeps in their respective patches. As part of the Operation Sceptre week of action, the head of a charity told children: “don’t be frightened to open up.”
