The shootings occurred early Saturday morning in front of four bars in Hillcrest; four people were shot and one required eye surgery
San Diego police are investigating a string of pellet gun shootings in which multiple people and vehicles were shot in Hillcrest early Saturday morning as possible hate crimes, officials said Monday. Police said someone drove up to five different businesses with LGBTQIA+ markings displayed outside and fired gel pellets from the car, said Ashley Nicholes, a police department spokesperson. The person then drove off.
Down the street, a vehicle in front of Pecs Bar had also been shot and damaged. Investigators soon learned shootings occurred at The Rail and Number One on Fifth Avenue, bars located less than a mile away. Vehicles and another security guard had been shot. A man walking with his wife near Harney and Juan Streets in Old Town was also struck with gel pellets, according to Nicholes. Officers said they are not investigating the Old Town assault as a possible hate crime.
