Police cordoned off a major road near Manchester city centre on Monday evening after a topless man climbed up scaffolding.Pictures and videos shared with the Manchester Evening News showed the man climbing up scaffolding on a building with police tape blocking off the main road into the city centre.Crowds of people could be seen in video footage stood beside the cordon as a number of police vehicles and fire engines attended.
One witness, who provided pictures and videos to the M.E.N, said that the person was 'shouting' at the public who were watching on. Police confirmed the man was later brought down to safety and is being supported by officers. No injuries were reported. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 6:40pm this evening, officers were called to a concern for welfare of a male on scaffolding near Oxford Street in Manchester City Centre.
“Emergency services and specialist negotiators attended the scene, and the male was brought to safety. He is currently being supported by GMP officers and support services. No injuries have been reported. No arrests have been made.” A spokesperson for GMFRS added: “At approximately 7.20pm on Monday, 10th July, firefighters were called to assist police at an incident on Oxford Street in Manchester city centre. Fire engines from Manchester Central and Moss Side stations, alongside the Technical Response Unit from Leigh, quicky attended the scene. Fire crews remain at the scene at this time.”
