New research has found plants undergoing physiological stress make ultrasonic sounds.

Bluebonnets and other Texas wildflowers, including Indian paintbrushes, move in the wind in a field on Thursday, March 9, 2023 in Brenham. The woefully under-watered plant in your living room or the one your cat is always chewing on may be crying out for help — you just can’t hear it.

Under normal conditions when a plant takes in water it forms a continuous stream within the plant, starting at the roots, and when that stream is disrupted there is a noise. Researchers also created models to identify the condition of the plants based on the sounds made, so depending on the sound they could distinguish what the plants’ stressor was — drought or cutting. The sound, described as “ultrasonic clicks,” from the plants can be detected from a distance of 3 to 5 meters and heard by many mammals and insects, meaning it could have communication potential.

The noises also open the door to the possibility of plants being able to pick up on stress signals from other plants and in response prepare for drought or defense for an insect attack, Roux said.“Obviously, there's no intent on the part of the plan to communicate, however, it has been shown that plants can detect sound waves,” Roux said.
