are set to be streamlined in a bid to avoid adding to the repeated chaos at Britain’s ports such as Dover,The Government has repeatedly delayed the introduction of the regulatory and customs checks on food and other imports which are legally required under theOn Wednesday the Cabinet Office will publish details of how the new border processes will work with a view to introducing them in full later this year.
A “trusted traders” programme will allow regular importers to avoid having to undergo the full checks every time, while firms will be able to send goods in bond so they cannot be opened until they reach a designated venue such as a warehouse where the required checks will take place. A Cabinet Office spokesperson said: “The Government is delivering on our ambition to have the world’s most effective border. Our new target operating model will reduce the need for checks for many types of goods. We are working with stakeholders and are taking a pragmatic approach to phasing in these controls to give business the opportunity to prepare.”
The checks were originally due to come into force at the end of the Brexit transition period which expired on 1 January, 2021. Parallel controls on goods going from the UK into the EU were introduced at that point and have seen tourists barred from taking snacks across the border.
