Pixar movies were once guaranteed to be hits and succeed at the box office, but the animation studio’s projects have lost momentum in recent years.
Pixar created numerous box office hits in the past, but in the last few years, its movies haven't reached the same success that the studio expects from its projects. The animation studio's first feature film was Toy Story, which made an astounding $394 million at the box office in 1994 and went on to become one of the most popular animated movies. It spawned three sequels, with a fourth one on the way, and one spin-off.
Following the massive success that was Toy Story 4 , Pixar's projects have struggled immensely. Onward made $142 million; Soul, Luca, and Turning Red were sent straight to Disney+; Lightyear earned $226 million; and Elemental made only $29.5 million at the domestic office and $48 million globally during its opening weekend. These films have not seen the same success as one would expect from a Pixar feature, and it's not even close.
Pixar decided to take risks and create original films, but the executives couldn't have accounted for a pandemic to derail their plans. The new IPs mixed with COVID-19 forcing worldwide shutdowns was a dangerous combination that severely damaged Pixar's brand. But even though the animation studio has returned to releasing its new movies in theaters, it has yet to see the same success as it did pre-pandemic.
The man in charge of Disney, a company that makes plenty of animated content, suggested that animation is not for adults. Chapek completely disregarded a large demographic of his company's target audience, and his attitude may have affected Pixar's projects. Movie theaters began to open back up on a large scale around the middle of 2021, and yet, Luca and Turning Red didn't receive theatrical releases.
