Some of these do feel like crimes: licking the top of an open soy sauce bottle, for example, or touching passing bits of sushi with a licked finger. You wouldn’t be arrested in the UK for such behaviour, but you would quite rightly be chucked out of the restaurant. Yet using– an act for which two Japanese diners were genuinely arrested last week – initially seems more like the knife inside the jam pot: less criminal, more… uncouth.
