The term \u0027elections\u0027 for the 295 rural municipalities in Saskatchewan is misleading, since most positions are filled by acclamation.

As of Monday, 264 RMs had reported their election results to the provincial Ministry of Government Relations. Just a third of these RMs required an actual vote; in the others, all candidates were acclaimed. The ministry says 5,288 votes were cast last month, but it does not track the number of eligible voters. The Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities referred an inquiry about eligible voters to the ministry.
But anyone who cares should know the number of acclamations in RMs is an ongoing issue, not an aberration. An Elections Saskatchewan report showed 78 per cent of RM positions were acclaimed in the previous two elections in 2020 and 2018.
