His 1976 hoops squad is still held up in Piscataway as a shining example of what is possible for a Rutgers sports team. The Scarlet Knights turned the 2,800-seat College Avenue Gymnasium — affectionately known as The Barn — into the epicenter of East Coast basketball, winning their first 31 games before losing to Michigan in the national semifinals and UCLA in the consolation game.Sellers arrived at Rutgers in 1972.

“He put Rutgers sports on the map,” said Brian Perkins, a classmate and a Rutgers booster. “I still believe that’s the team by which all Rutgers teams are measured. I hope the broader Rutgers community will rally around him and thank him for that.”
