Pharmacy boss hits out at Facebook trolls 'humiliating' staff over medicine delays and rising costs
Pharmacies are facing multiple challenges including NHS funding arrangements, rising costs, supply problems, the loss of staff to other health roles, and abuse and aggression from some customers, the head of a chemists’ chain has said.
Now, local pharmacies and access to medicine are being discussed too. Pendle Council’s West Craven Committee recently heard that insulin has been in short supply recently. Mr Badenhorst told the Local Democracy Reporting Service this week: “There are several reasons for medicine shortages in the UK. One major factor is the global supply chain, as many medications are manufactured overseas and disruptions to production or transport can lead to shortages.
Mr Badenhorst said: “There have been reports of intermittent shortages of certain types of insulin in the UK in recent years, particularly for certain brands or formulations. These shortages are typically due to a variety of factors, including supply-chain disruptions, manufacturing issues and increased demand. Some patients have reported difficulties in obtaining their prescribed insulin.
He added: “At our pharmacy in Barnoldswick, we have also been temporarily short-staffed which briefly created additional pressures there. We have experienced an increase in the number of concerns raised by the public. However, we have also seen a huge increase in abusive, aggressive and violent behaviour towards our team, who are trying their best. These behaviours aggravate the situation in the pharmacy and add to the pressure, stress and anxiety of working.
But he added: “Due to our pharmacies being 95 per cent reliant on NHS funding, we have limited resources for funding which makes it difficult to invest in staff training and development for staff, upgrade technology and infrastructure, and provide additional support services for patients. Further, community pharmacies have not had any increases in funding from the Department of Health for five years, which in real terms is a 30 per cent reduction in funding.
“Despite our best efforts trying to rectify the difficult situation the pharmacy finds itself in, we have witnessed individuals encouraging others to leave bad reviews and to keep on complaining. We find this approach demeaning and bullying in nature and unnecessarily redirects our teams to deal with repeated complaints, rather than focus on delivering healthcare services in the community.”
“Unfortunately, this ‘pharmacy integration fund’ has resulted in community pharmacists being the pool of pharmacists from which the NHS is recruiting, often leaving the community pharmacies less integrated and struggling.
