After two seasons and zero wins, a radical experiment is coming to an end.
has been running in the FIA World Endurance Championship without a rear wing since 2022. While the resulting car has looked great, Peugeot's prototype has been far from competitive: Between two cars, the 9X8 program has just one podium all season. That means the brand may be ready to make major revisions this offseason, ones that will reportedly involve a more conventional aerodynamic setup. In other words, Peugeot is putting a wing on its wingless racer.
While giving up on the dream of a wingless race car is likely as much of a disappointment for Peugeot itself as it is for fans of the car, the 9X8's struggles have made the switch an obvious choice. Ferrari and Toyota have dominated the 2023 World Endurance Championship, while Porsche and Cadillac's LMDh-based cars have outscored the Peugeots and, crucially, won races in the American IMSA series.
